What is a serial number?

A serial number is a unique code given to one individual item, so it can be told apart from every other unit of the same product.

A model number or GTIN says what a product is. A serial number says which one. That difference is what lets a brand register an owner, check a warranty claim, run a recall for one production batch, or tell a genuine item from a copy.

Most serials combine a fixed part, such as a product code, production date or batch, with a part that changes for every unit. That changing part either counts up or is random.

Serial number best practices.

A serial gets printed once and read for years. A few choices up front save a lot of support later.

Skip look-alike characters

Leave out 0, O, 1 and I so customers can read the serial off a label and type it correctly.

Never reuse a serial

Keep a record of every batch you issue. Random serials or a check character make invented serials easy to spot.

Build in the date or batch

A date or batch code in the serial tells you when an item was made, which helps with recalls and warranty checks.

Link it to the owner

Print the serial next to a QR code that opens registration, so each serial is tied to an owner and a warranty start date.

From format to packaging in three steps.

  1. Step 1

    Choose a format

Pick sequential or random numbering, a prefix, the length and, if you need them, a date, batch code and check character.

  2. Step 2

    Generate and download

Create up to 10,000 unique serials at once and download them as CSV for your label printer or packaging supplier.

  3. Step 3

    Print and connect

Print each serial on the product or its label. Add your GTIN to get a GS1 Digital Link per serial, so every item gets its own QR code.

Give every serial its own page.

Veribl opens a page for each serialized item when its GS1 Digital Link QR is scanned, where the owner registers, sees their warranty and files a claim tied to that exact serial number. Free for up to 100 products.
