Check a GTIN
Paste a barcode number to confirm the check digit and see its type and 14-digit form.
Check any EAN, UPC or GTIN barcode number, calculate a missing check digit, or paste a whole product list to find the mistakes before they reach packaging.
Your result appears here as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere.
The check digit is the last digit of every GTIN. GS1 calculates it with a weighted sum, so a single mistyped digit is always caught.
Example: EAN-13 400638133393?
| Digit | 4 | 0 | 0 | 6 | 3 | 8 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 9 | 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| × weight | 1 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 3 |
| = | 4 | 0 | 0 | 18 | 3 | 24 | 1 | 9 | 3 | 9 | 9 | 9 |
Sum 89. The next multiple of ten is 90, so the check digit is 1 and the full GTIN is 4006381333931.
| Format | Digits | Barcode | Typically used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTIN-13 | 13 | EAN-13 | Consumer products sold outside North America |
| GTIN-12 | 12 | UPC-A | Consumer products sold in the US and Canada |
| GTIN-8 | 8 | EAN-8 | Very small packs with no room for a full barcode |
| GTIN-14 | 14 | ITF-14 or GS1-128 | Cases and cartons of a product |
Every format can be written as 14 digits by adding leading zeros. That 14-digit form is what databases and GS1 Digital Links use.
