Battery passports, warranty and support for e-bike brands.

Yes. Under the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, batteries for light means of transport (LMT), which includes e-bike and e-scooter batteries, need a battery passport when they are placed on the EU market from 18 February 2027. EV batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh are covered too. Portable and SLI (starter) batteries are exempt from the passport.

From 18 February 2027, for every EV battery, LMT battery and industrial battery above 2 kWh placed on the EU market or put into service. There is no grace period for batteries newly placed on the market after that date.

Annex XIII of the regulation defines the contents: general battery and manufacturer information, carbon footprint, supply chain due diligence, material composition including recycled content, performance and durability, and end-of-life information. The European Commission’s 2026 guidance lists 71 data points, 54 of which are mandatory for LMT batteries at the February 2027 deadline. Some data is public to anyone who scans, and some is restricted to parties such as repairers, recyclers and authorities.

The obligation sits with the economic operator placing the battery on the EU market: the manufacturer for batteries made in the EU, and for imported batteries the importer, or the distributor if no importer fills that role. Much of the data, such as carbon footprint and recycled content, comes from cell and material suppliers, so brands and importers need to collect it from their supply chain.

No. Batteries placed on the market before 18 February 2027 may remain in circulation without one. A battery that is withdrawn and reintroduced, for example after repurposing or remanufacturing, needs a passport, and the operator reintroducing it owns that obligation.

Yes. The regulation names a QR code on the battery as the data carrier. It resolves to the battery’s unique identifier and opens its passport record, so the code needs to stay legible for the life of the battery.

Owners scan the QR code or open their product page, choose Submit warranty claim, describe the issue and attach photos.
