For a product sold in shops, use EAN-13 (or UPC-A in the US and Canada). Use EAN-8 only when the pack is too small for EAN-13. Cartons of a product use ITF-14. When you need batch, serial or expiry in the code, use GS1-128 on logistics labels or GS1 DataMatrix where space is tight.

No. This generator draws any valid GTIN, but the number itself must be assigned to your company by GS1. Retailers and marketplaces such as Amazon check GTINs against GS1’s registry, and a made-up number can belong to someone else.

An EAN-13 or UPC-A barcode at 100% size is about 37.3 mm wide and 25.9 mm tall. GS1 allows retail barcodes from 80% to 200% of that size. Don’t shrink the height on its own, and keep the white margin on both sides, or scanners may fail.

Dark bars on a light background. Black on white is safest. Avoid red, orange or yellow bars, which most scanners can’t see, and test a printed proof before the full run.

They carry the same kind of number. UPC-A holds 12 digits and is used mainly in the US and Canada; EAN-13 holds 13 and is used almost everywhere else. Scanners worldwide read both.
