Warranty Policy Template

WarrantyLegalCustomer Support

A warranty policy tells customers what you will fix, for how long, and how to ask. A clear one cuts support tickets, because owners can see for themselves whether a problem is covered. This template gives you complete limited warranty text you can paste into your policy page, manual or product page, plus the length ranges and legal basics behind it.

Treat it as a starting point. Warranty rules differ by country and product type, so have a lawyer review the final text for the markets you sell in.

[Brand name] Limited Warranty

1. Who gives this warranty. [Company legal name], [address] ("we", "us") gives this limited warranty to the original purchaser of a new [Product name or product line] ("the Product") bought from us or from an authorized reseller.

2. What is covered. We warrant that the Product is free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal consumer use, for the period in section 3.

3. How long it lasts. Coverage lasts [12 months] from the [date of purchase / date of delivery]. [Battery and electrical components are covered for [period].] A repaired or replaced Product is covered for the remainder of the original period or [90 days], whichever is longer.

4. What we will do. If the Product has a covered defect, we will, at our option, repair it, replace it with a new or refurbished Product of equal value, or refund the purchase price. We decide which remedy applies.

5. What is not covered. This warranty does not cover:

  • normal wear and tear
  • damage from misuse, abuse, neglect or accidents, including drops, liquids and fire
  • damage from repairs, changes or opening the Product by anyone we have not authorized
  • use for commercial or rental purposes
  • cosmetic damage, such as scratches or dents, that does not affect function
  • consumables and parts that wear out, such as [filters, blades, batteries after [period], tires]

6. How to make a claim. Contact us at [claim link or email] within the warranty period and have your serial number and proof of purchase ready. We will tell you whether to send the Product back or repair it at home. [Shipping costs to us are paid by [us / you].]

7. Proof of purchase. We may ask for a receipt, order confirmation or registration record showing the purchase date.

8. Registration is optional. Registering your Product is not required and does not affect your warranty coverage. Registering simply makes claims and safety notices faster.

9. Limits. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE LIMITED TO THE DURATION OF THIS WARRANTY. WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. Some states do not allow limits on how long an implied warranty lasts, or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above may not apply to you.

10. Your rights. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from state to state.

11. Customers in the EU and UK. This commercial guarantee is in addition to your legal rights under consumer law, including the legal guarantee of conformity of at least two years in the EU. It does not affect those rights.

12. Contact. [Company name], [address], [email], [phone], [support hours].

Full vs limited warranty

In the US, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act requires a written warranty on a consumer product to be clearly designated either "full" or "limited." A full warranty must meet federal standards: you fix the product within a reasonable time and at no charge, you cannot limit how long implied warranties last, and you cannot require the owner to return a registration card to get coverage.

A warranty that does not meet those standards must be called a limited warranty. That covers most brand warranties, because they exclude damage from misuse, limit coverage to the original buyer, or offer a remedy that is not unconditional. If your product is sold in the US, put the word "Limited" in the title, as the template does. Our warranty registration guide covers how registration fits with each type.

Under Directive (EU) 2019/771, sellers of goods to consumers in the EU are responsible for any lack of conformity that exists at delivery and appears within at least two years. This legal guarantee applies automatically, whether or not the buyer registers the product, and consumers are entitled to repair or replacement, with price reduction or termination in some cases.

Your own warranty is a commercial guarantee. It is a voluntary extra, and it is binding on you once offered. The guarantee statement must be available to the consumer on a durable medium, such as a PDF or an email, and it must state that the consumer has legal rights under the legal guarantee and that the commercial guarantee does not affect them. Section 11 of the template covers the notice, but check how each member state wants it worded.

Show the policy where owners see it

A policy buried in a PDF only gets read when something has gone wrong. With Veribl, each product's warranty terms are shown on its product page. Owners register by scanning the QR code on the quick-start card or in the manual, the warranty starts from their registration or purchase date, and they receive a warranty certificate. If something fails, they file a claim from the same page, with the product and serial number already filled in.

Set up your terms in Veribl warranty management, or see what the owner receives in our warranty certificate template.
