License one from GS1. In the US that is GS1 US, which sells single numbers and company prefixes for larger ranges. Each product variant, such as every size and color, needs its own number. This generator draws the barcode once you have the number.

No. A made-up number can belong to another company's product, and retailers and marketplaces such as Amazon check UPCs against GS1's registry. Use only numbers licensed to your company.

A UPC-A has 12 digits and is the standard in the US and Canada. An EAN-13 has 13 and is used almost everywhere else. A UPC is the same number as an EAN-13 with a leading zero, and scanners worldwide read both, so one UPC works for products sold in Europe too.

At 100% a UPC-A is about 1.47 by 1.02 inches (37.3 by 25.9 mm). GS1 allows 80% to 200% of that size. Keep the full height and the white margin on both sides, and print dark bars on a light background.

The last digit, calculated from the first 11. It lets a scanner catch a misread or mistyped number. Enter all 12 digits and we tell you if the check digit is wrong, or enter 11 and we add it for you.
